FAQ

What types of certification are available?

There are a couple of different types of certification. This article explains the difference between them.

Three types of certification

We have three options for people who need some paperwork for their loggers:

  • Certificate of Compliance
  • Certificate of Accuracy
  • NATA Certificate

Is certification the same as calibration?

No. This article discusses that question.

Do I need a certificate?

The first question to ask is “Do I need certification?” The answer is probably “no”.

Certification is usually required for people doing clinical trials or product development. For the average pharmacy or medical centre, it is not required.

If you believe you do need a certificate, read on.

Certificate of Compliance

Inside each of our loggers is a temperature sensor. The factory that creates these sensors certifies that their product meets a minimum standard of accuracy.

If you request one, we can give you a certificate that looks like the following…

certificate of compliance

As you can see, the certificate is just an acknowledgement of the manufacturer’s claims about their product in general. It doesn’t make any claims about individual loggers.

Individual testing

The next type of certification is where the individual logger is tested.

Loggers are placed in a testing chamber that can be set very accurately to a particular temperature. The logger’s reading is noted and compared to the known temperature in the chamber. Normally, the logger will be tested at three different temperatures.

You will end up with a certificate that shows the actual reading, the logger’s reading and the error margin. The logger will pass if the error is less than the manufacturer’s stated margin of error.

We use two separate labs for this testing, and the difference between them is subtle but important.

Lab One – Certificate of Accuracy

Lab One uses a testing chamber that has been calibrated using NATA traceable instruments by an accredited third party, but the facility is not itself NATA accredited. It is officially called a “traceable calibration certificate”.

Lab Two – NATA Certificate

Lab Two is a NATA-certified laboratory. That means they have had their equipment and staff tested and accredited by NATA and can officially issue an ISO 17025 calibration certificate.

The difference in cost

As you would expect, there is a marked difference in cost between the two tests.

Lab Temperature Humidity Both
Certificate of Accuracy
$121.00
$121.00
$231.00
NATA Certificate
$269.50
$269.50
$522.50

What is NATA?

The National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) is the recognised national accreditation authority for analytical laboratories and testing service providers in Australia. It is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that provides independent assurance of technical competence.

NATA accredits organisations to perform testing and inspection activities for their products and services. This gives consumers the assurance they need to make safe, healthy and reliable choices .
